For me as an individual, I feel cybersecurity is all about the latest processes and techniques used to safeguard your sensitive data, hardware and networks. It is a general terminology that covers a group of other topics related to security.
But with the evolution of technology, the generation of black hat hackers has also involved and has become more innovative, aggressive, complex and difficult to tackle.
There is no single magic way that works for everyone, different people learn via different ways, and while some people prefer teaching themselves with the help of internet resources, others prefer going through a traditional education program to gain the knowledge they need for a career in cyber security.
Which way should you go?
It depends fully on your own preferences and your own learning capabilities, if you can’t easily keep a daily learning program on your own, then maybe a college degree is more suitable and vice versa.
Here are few ways that you can actually go through:
- Bachelor degree in information security or cyber security,
Believe it or not many universities nowadays provide BSc degrees in those topics, and it can be very useful for collecting the basics and learning some of the advanced topics.
- Master degree in information security or cyber security,
Where you can learn more advanced topics, and maybe even pick a specialized field that you wish to be an expert in.
- Self-Learning:
The amount of learning courses, videos, tutorials and free books available online can be overwhelming to many people because it is simply beyond imagination. You can learn anything you want to learn from the internet given that you have the needed determination and self discipline.

To master the art of safety and cybersecurity you can follow these:
- ISO
- IoT Security
- TLS, SSL & HTTPS
- PCI DSS
- The future for cyber security professional is pretty bright like the medical field and technical support.
- The most important thing is focusing and mastering networking, routers and switches including network security and enhanced network security.
- Master the operating system, in order to secure traffic in networks, servers, personal computers and work groups.
- Master the Server to secure web sites from cyber attacks.
- Master security tools, such as Wireshark, Linux security flavors and more.
- Learn technical support, such as building PCs from scratch and for learning the function of each device and components within the system.
- This makes it easier for troubleshooting issues. You will also need technical support for disaster and recovery, after cyber attacks.
- Computer Programming is mandatory, java, python, or ruby, vb scripts, java scripts or the most popular programming languages used today in security.

Here are the best programming languages you need to know if you want to get somewhere in your cybersecurity career:
1. Python
Python is a high-level programming language highly popular among the cyber experts and has gained much traction owing to its code readability, simple syntax, and wide libraries.
2. JavaScript:
JavaScript is the most common programming language out there. Primarily, Javascript powers the internet and adds interactivity to the web pages. Owing to its extensive usage and prevalence on the web, Java is one language that you really need to know to advance in your CyberSecurity career.
3. PHP:
PHP is a language for developing websites. Since most websites are created with the help of PHP, learning it would help you deal with the intruders, for instance, cases involving DDoS attacks.
4. SQL:
SQL is most often used for managing the data stored in the databases. However, hackers are increasingly utilizing it to damage or steal the stored data. For instance, SQL attacks, which make, a good understanding of the SQL language critically important for your success.
To be one step ahead of the hackers, you need to have a know-how of as many languages as you can have. The more languages you learn, the better it is for your career as a cybersecurity expert.
You never know, when one of these comes in handy since cybersecurity is a vast and fast-evolving field that offers a myriad of diverse job opportunities; security analysts, ethical hackers and forensic investigators to name a few. However, the one factor that gives you the edge over all others is knowledge of coding.
Apart from this, you need to have an in-depth knowledge of the following to succeed in cybersecurity:
- Networking methods, administration, and automation
- Software development and attack methods
- Data forensics and intrusion detection
- Systems analysis and design
- Enterprise needs
- Global ethics
