What is kali linux?
Kali Linux is a Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at advanced Penetration Testing and Security Auditing.
Kali contains several hundred tools which are geared towards various information security tasks, such as Penetration Testing, Security research, Computer Forensics and Reverse Engineering.
It is a meticulously crafted OS that specifically caters to the likes of network analysts & penetration testers.
The presence of a bunch of tools that come pre-installed with Kali transforms it into an ethical hacker’s swiss-knife.
Previously known as Backtrack, Kali Linux advertises itself as a more polished successor with more testing-centric tools, unlike Backtrack which had multiple tools that would serve the same purpose, in turn, making it jampacked with unnecessary utilities. This makes ethical hacking using Kali Linux a simplified task.
History of Kali Linux
- It was developed by Mati Aharoni and Devon Kearns of Offensive Security through the rewrite of BackTrack, their previous information security testing Linux distribution based on Knoppix, originally it was designed with a focus on kernel auditing, from which it got its name Kernel Auditing LInux.
- BackTrack is one of the most famous Linux distribution systems, as can be proven by the number of downloads, which reached more than four million as of BackTrack Linux 4.0 pre final.
- Kali Linux Version 1.0 was released on March 12, 2013. Five days later, Version 1.0.1 was released, which fixed the USB keyboard issue. In those five days, Kali had been downloaded more than 90,000 times.
- An updated version, Kali Linux 2.0, was released on August 11, 2015. This distribution aimed to provide a better end-user experience, while still maintaining the full functionality of the previous versions.
- One of the major improvements available in Kali Linux 2.0 was moving toward a rolling distribution. This meant that the Kali Linux developers were pulling updated base Linux packages directly as they were updated, giving the user a stable platform that is updated regularly.
