Do you mean Rooting maybe yes then there are some major disadvantages like your warranty will void but that is not in the case if your phone’s warranty is already void and some companies allow rooting your phone at the same time without making a compromise of voiding your warranty you can be prone to viruses but if you don’t do anything stupid then you will be safe and your phone will not get any updates and if that phone installs an update your Root will be compromised and you have to get your Root access back again by the same method. I can give you a general guide though I would need the brand and Android version to get down to the specifics.

1. Enable USB debugging from developer options.
2. Connect your phone to your PC via ADB, by installing appropriate drivers, if on Windows.
3. Unlock your bootloader, if it is locked. Samsung, HTC, Xiaomi, Asus usually tend to lock theirs. Please note that this erases all user data and formats the phone.
4. Install TWRP or any other custom recovery.
5. Flash SuperSU/Magisk via TWRP. Magisk is preferred nowadays.
